ICYMI: The Open Markets Team Begins New Chapter Stronger Than Ever

After their separation from New America, Open Markets will continue its influential research into corporate monopoly

Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, The New York Times released a story that the Open Markets program was dismissed from the New America think tank after commending the European Union for taking action to curb Google’s abuse of its monopoly power. The Open Markets program is comprised of journalists and researchers that focus on exposing the dangers that corporate monopolies pose to our economy and our democracy.

While no longer at New America, the Open Markets team is more committed than ever to exposing the harmful effects of private concentrated power in the United States and ensuring freedom for the American people.

Many Members of Congress, intellectuals, and leaders have come out in support of Open Markets and expressed their excitement about the organization’s new chapter.

Below are some quotes of interest:

“It is difficult to overstate Mr. Lynn’s influence in raising concerns about the market dominance of Google, as well as of other tech companies such as Amazon and Facebook.” (Kenneth P. Vogel, The New York Times)

“The past couple of years have seen a resurgence of political interest in antitrust policy, which is increasingly seen as a potential solution to America’s current dilemma of high corporate profits and slow economic growth…And it’s fair to say that the primary intellectual mover behind all of this has been Barry Lynn, a longtime fellow at the New America Foundation who leads a small group there that called itself the Open Markets Initiative.” (Matt Yglesias, Vox)

“Americans are fed up with monopolies rigging our economy & politics. I'm excited to see what Open Markets does next.” (Rep. John Conyers, D-MI)

“Open Markets does terrific work on monopoly power and inequality. Excited for their new chapter!” (Rep. Keith Ellison, D-MN)

“This story is troubling… Think tanks play a critical role in shaping policy, but their credibility is jeopardized when decisions are based on funder preferences.” (Sen. Elizabeth Warren)

“We're big fans of Open Markets' work exploring the impact of monopolies on our economy & democracy. Can't wait to see what they do next.” (Congressional Progressive Caucus)
